Zhaochen Chen (b. 1998) is an artist based in London and Beijing, working across sculpture, installation, moving image, and kinetic systems. She holds a BA and MFA in Sculpture from the Central Academy of Fine Arts and an MA in Computational Arts from Goldsmiths, University of London. With over ten years of experience in sculpture, her practice explores the unstable relationship between the body, technology, and non-human forms.
ARTIST STATEMENT
The body serves as a point of departure in Zhaochen Chen's practice. Her work begins with questions of the body, identity, and human experience, and gradually moves towards fragmented and transformed forms entangled with technology, machines, artificial intelligence, and non-human forms. Through these shifting relationships, she explores how we recognise and understand bodies, and how our sense of self changes when the boundaries of the human become unstable.
Working across sculpture, installation, moving image, and kinetic systems, Chen combines traditional sculptural processes with mechanical and computational approaches. Her works often occupy spaces between the familiar and the unfamiliar, the organic and the artificial. Through movement, transformation, and material experimentation, she creates forms that resist fixed definitions, exploring how bodies, materials, and technologies shape our perception, emotions, and experience of being human.
